Just like how KFC became a Christmas tradition for Japanese, I would argue that McD Prosperity Burger has also became a Chinese New Year tradition for Malaysian. I just found out that the Prosperity Burger has been around for almost 30 years. It was invented in 1994, a proud Malaysian invention. That just means it has been there since as long as I can remember. That is just shocking to think about.
This is not an advertisement for McD. But I guess there is no need to. Ask any Malaysian, they sure would know about Prosperity Burger and they also know that it is a seasonal item on the menu only during CNY. The story of the Prosperity Burger is what so called a highly successful marketing strategy. Whenever CNY is approaching, everyone is anticipating it, including me. It is part of many's childhood memory, it tastes nostalgic, and anything that nostalgic would sells. With its seasonality, the scarcity makes people crave for it even more.
Personally I could still remember during the CNY when I was small, all the eateries around my area were all closed for holidays. McD was always the one still opened selling Prosperity Burger. Although it is no longer the case nowadays, every CNY I would still make sure I get myself a Prosperity Burger as long as I am in Malaysia. As much as I don't want to admit it, I think I really like the peppery taste of Prosperity Burger and crispy curly fries that comes with it.
