For this one, I was ready to be disappointed. But it turns out to be not too shabby. The plot is very basic, most of concepts are very derivatives, but as I said, I didn't expect much from the film. I was just curious how good the visual effects are. Since the visual effect of the film was produced by One Cool Group Limited, a Hong Kong company founded by Louis Koo, who was also one of the main characters in the film, I was mostly curious how good the CG visual effect tech has progressed in Hong Kong. It piques my interest as Louis Koo founded the company and having the vision to establish a local visual effect studio that is on the caliber of those in Hollywood, and to reduce the reliance on the western visual effect studios. The vision is admirable.
To be honest, Hong Kong cinema is mainly famous for films about gang wars, police, corruption, or kung fu, martial art heavy, definitely not for this kind of big budget, visual effect heavy films set in a futuristic environment. Think Hong Kong film, think infernal affairs or Ip Man. I would argue that this film is an important milestone in Hong Kong cinema in terms of visual effect industry. Although it is not as polished yet, it is made with love. It also reminds us that how difficult the visual effect work is, and how under-appreciated it is. When it is good, nobody praises the artists behind the scene. On the other hand, when it is anything less that perfect, the audience is ready to bash the film into oblivion.
